In this brief students were tasked to create a 30 sec music video for a South African band using After Effects.
SOLUTION:
Die Antwoord is a South African hip hop group formed in Cape Town in 2008. The group consists out of 2 rappers, Ninja (Watkin Tudor Jones) & Yo-Landi Visser (Anri du Toit) with producers HITEK5000 and Lil2Hood.
They are considered a highly controversial music group as their music is built upon the basis of vulgar Afrikaans slang. Die Antwoord's "zef" culture, described as modern and trashy, appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements. They have managed to create a counterculture movement known as zef based upon the "kommen". Their music is frowned upon in the Afrikaans household but the way they use Afrikaans as a gateway to international fame has always fascinated me. Die Antwoord's music strives to be artistically unique by using a variety of South African languages in their music. By incorporating local artists in their album, Die Antwoord is using their fame and audience to uplift the small artists and the diverse South African language. By using Die Antwoord’s signature art style as visual inspiration, this video is based of the hunt of a springbok. It can be a reference to living the fast,dangerous life. The life of a herbivore is compared to Die Antwoord as the springbok signifies the South African band’s heritage and their logo. The continuous running loop represents the never ending chase a springbuck endures in its lifetime. This can be linked to the journey of Die Antwoord to reach fame and success.
